March 2013 | It is estimated that at least 5 million patients are immobilized in the pre-hospital environment in the US each year. Most have no complaints of neck or back pain or other evidence of spine injury. Studies show that pre-hospital care providers can safely apply spine injusry assessment criteria and not miss any clinically significant spine injuries. Although these guidelines are available, training and practice is needed to become proficient at using these criteria.
