Overview

This course was designed to challenge educators to expand debriefing skills beyond the basics. The course will include: content on briefing as a component of the debriefing process; simulation activities where debriefing may expand participant outcomes; and different debriefing techniques, which may be combined, to increase participant competencies. Educators will develop a debriefing quality improvement plan.

Objectives

  1. Create an effective plan to include briefing as a component of debriefing.
  2. Examine simulation in a variety of situations where debriefing may augment participant outcomes.
  3. Differentiate ways to move debriefing beyond the basics.
  4. Select debriefing approach or approaches for simulation experience/s.
  5. Develop a debriefing quality improvement plan.

About the Authors

Sharon Decker; PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN

Sharon Decker, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, is a professor and Covenant Health System Endowed Chair in Simulation and Nursing Education in the School of Nursing at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in Lubbock, Texas. In adddition, she is the director of the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center, a multimodality, interprofessional simulation center. Dr. Decker's educational research, supported by multiple grants, is about how simulation can be used to improve learning and promote professional and interprofessional competencies. She serves as a national and international consultant in assisting nurse educators in the integration of simulation into curricula and competency assessments. She is co-author of a chapter about debriefing for the 2nd edition of Simulation in Nursing Education. She is a Fellow in the National League for Nursing's Academy of Nursing Education and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

 

 

 

Mindi Anderson, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, CNE, CHSE-A, ANEF

Mindi Anderson, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, CNE, CHSE-A, ANEF is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Arlington College of Nursing and Health Innovation, but will be moving to the College of Nursing at the University of Central Florida in fall, 2015. Dr. Anderson has presented widely on the topic of simulation and is engaged in research and publishing on multiple types of simulation (high-fidelity, standardized patients, virtual, etc.), and simulation methodologies, such as role-modeling and interprofessional education.
