PRESS RELEASE:
University of Maryland Baltimore School of Nursing names lab “Laerdal Room”
Over 70 attendees, including representatives from Norway and Chile, attended the one-day Simulation User Network – SUN – meeting held November 5th, 2006 at the University of Maryland School of Nursing at Baltimore.
A highlight of the meeting was a presentation to Tore Laerdal and Rosie Patterson of Laerdal Medical, naming a lab at the School of Nursing as the “Laerdal Room.” Laerdal and the School of Nursing have had a long relationship.
The user meeting was held following the National League for Nursing’s Technology Conference where results of the NLN / Laerdal Research Project were disseminated. A book for nurse educators outlining basic concepts and essentials of getting started on simulation development, implementation, and evaluation will be released in early 2007. This relationship has now led to a more broad-based alliance to help with the development of specialized curriculum for nurse educator faculty in simulation education methodology.
“The NLN’s commitment to nursing education research cannot be overstated,” said its CEO Dr. Ruth Corcoran. “The success of the collaboration with Laerdal over the last three years is amply illustrated by the project results.”
Project Director Dr. Pamela Jeffries from the Indiana University School of Nursing says, “It is the group's intent that our simulation research and findings will help other nursing educators as they begin to incorporate the use of simulations into their teaching-learning practices. We have learned a lot and realize our work has initiated more research questions and promoted the need to obtain more evidenced-based findings for educators who are developing and using simulations in their teaching."
During the technology conference, Rosie Patterson recognized the University of Maryland School of Nursing as a designated Laerdal Center of Excellence. Those honored in the presentation were Debra Spunt, Director of Clinical Simulation Laboratories; Dr. Janet Allan, Dean School of Nursing; and Dr. Barbara Covington, Associate Dean, Information and Technology.
