NLN publishes a book on simulations for nurse educators
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Study made possible by Laerdal Medical Corporation

March 2007 - The National League for Nursing has released a book, Simulation in Nursing Education: From Conceptualization to Evaluation (NLN, 2007), the first comprehensive guide of its kind. The book is the work of a group of nurse educators from all types of programs who share what they learned in a three-year, multi-site project that tested a simulation model and the use of simulation in nursing education. The book outlines basic concepts and essentials of getting started on simulation development, implementation and evaluation.

In 2003, the NLN announced a new relationship with Laerdal Medical to engage in vitally important nursing education research. Laerdal awarded the NLN a three-year grant to support a national, multi-site, multi-method project to develop and test teaching models using simulation to promote student learning in nursing. Through this initiative, eight NLN member schools were selected as project sites to develop innovative uses of simulation in teaching nursing care of adults and children. Participating schools documented student outcomes of learning, specifically, how different types of simulations and the roles that students play in the simulation affect students' level of self-confidence, knowledge and satisfaction with learning.

The NLN/Laerdal relationship has led to a broad-based alliance to help nurse educators develop expertise in simulation education methodologies.

Project Director Dr. Pam Jeffries from the Indiana University School of Nursing says, “It is the group's intent that our simulation research, study findings, and experience will help other nursing educators as they begin to develop and incorporate the use of simulations into their teaching-learning practices."

Dr. Mary Anne Rizzolo, the Senior Director for Professional Development at the NLN provided staff support throughout the project. She said the book contains templates to guide simulation design and development; debriefing guidelines; information on how to integrate simulations into the curriculum; and tips on setting up a simulation laboratory.  All information is important to nurse educators as they begin using simulations in the nursing curriculum.

The book was edited by Jeffries with chapters contributed by every project coordinator involved in the 3-year, multi-site study.  Rizzolo, the NLN liaison for the project said the book was “loaded with information and practical advice,” such as how simulation may be used for student remediation and assessment of student skills and decision-making capability.

Copies of Simulation in Nursing Education Publication can be purchased from Laerdal at www.laerdal.com or by calling 877-LAERDAL (523-7325).  A summary of the research project can also be found on the NLN Website.

The National League for Nursing is the only organization that represents leaders in nursing education and nurse faculty from all types of nursing programs. It promotes excellence and innovation in nursing education, faculty development, the advancement of the science of nursing education, and quality testing/assessment. For 110 years, the NLN has helped prepare the nursing workforce to meet the needs of an ever-changing health care environment. For more information, visit www.nln.org
