How do you use simulation to achieve your program goals?

 

Simulation programs offered:

Simulation for Advanced Quality and Safety (SAQS) events focuses on strengthening critical thinking and teamwork with an emphasis on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement initiatives and the National Patient Safety Goals. 

The SAQ's are being offered to all acute care RN's and CNA's to validate, educate and enhance the bedside nurse’s skills/knowledge for providing patient care.  By integrating IHI initiatives, technology and low occurrence/high risk patient scenarios into our programs we are hoping to improve and reinforce communication, teamwork, clinical practices and a culture of safety.

The Little Company of Mary Extension Nursing Program has allowed the two community colleges to increase enrollment by 24-48 students a year.  Extension students attend classes, train in the simulation lab and participate in clinical rounds all on the hospital campuses.  Both Community College Nursing Extension Programs have integrated simulation into all semesters of the nursing curricula and 1st/2nd semester competency check-offs.  Through scenarios, role playing, and working with programmed simulators in a safe learning environment, nursing students can practice their medical skills, decision making processes, and critical thinking abilities without risking the well-being of actual patients.
New Graduate Residency Program requires each new graduate to participate in five simulation scenarios related to low incidence/high risk patient events that occur in the acute care setting.  The New Graduate Residency Program integrates clinical practice, educational learning, simulation and personal guidance and mentoring to support the transition from novice student to expert nurse. 
Heartcode ACLS and BLS:  Staff are mandated to do Heartcode ACLS and BLS via a voice activated, computer simulated program and mannequin.  The programs allow staff to maintain certifications required for providing safe patient care.
