Laerdal receives prestigious award at National League for Nursing’s 2007 Annual Education Summit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The National League for Nursing (NLN) held its annual conference in Phoenix, September 26 – 29. During the event, the NLN honored Laerdal Medical Corporation with its Public Service award. The award was accepted by company chairman, Tore Laerdal.

Laerdal's relationship with the NLN and the NLN Foundation began in 2003 with a multi-year, multi-site, and multi-method simulation research grant. The study resulted in a book, Simulation in Nursing Education: From Conceptualization to Evaluation (NLN, 2007), the first comprehensive guide of its kind for nurse educators. It outlines basic concepts and essentials for getting started on simulation development, implementation and evaluation.

The current 2006 – 2009 NLN - Laerdal project will create a web-based Simulation Research and Innovation Center where faculty can learn how to design and integrate effective simulations into their curricula, explore resources related to simulation, and dialogue with other faculty around a variety of topics.

The NLN and Laerdal also worked closely on the development of SimMan Nursing Scenarios mapped to the NCLEX. The preconfigured scenarios strengthen the link between nursing education and simulation. The package includes basic to advanced medical and surgical scenarios.

A highlight of the Summit was the first annual Debra Spunt Endowed Lecture, for excellence in nursing education. The lecture, endowed by Laerdal Medical, is in recognition of the contributions of Ms. Spunt, the former director of clinical simulation laboratories at the University of Maryland. Mr. Laerdal presented the award to Dr. Pamela Jeffries, who worked closely with Spunt and has served as the director of an NLN grant project, funded by Laerdal.

The BLS Anytime for Healthcare Providers kit and program were introduced at the conference and more than 225 participants used the kit during a special NLN Session presented by the University of Texas Arlington School of Nursing. BLS Anytime is designed for nursing students to acquire, practice and refresh CPR skills. It is an official American Heart Association program that results in a Healthcare Provider Certification card.
