Normal Pregnancy

Normal Pregnancy includes 5 practice sessions where each session includes:

  • Scenario
  • Pre-reflection
  • Practice section
  • Post reflection

SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES COVERED

  • Calculate estimated due date
  • Practice antenatal assessment
  • Perform an abdominal palpation in the antenatal setting
  • Assist a pregnant woman and her partner to develop a plan for labour and birth

EXAMPLES OF COMPETENCIES COVERED

  • Provide pre-pregnancy care
  • Monitor the progression of pregnancy
  • Assist the woman and her family to plan for an appropriate place of birth

Normal Birth

Normal Birth includes 15 practice sessions where each session includes:

  • Scenario
  • Pre-reflection
  • Practice section
  • Post reflection

SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES COVERED

  • Demonstrate competency in using the WHO labour Care Guide
  • Practice possible positions for birth
  • Cardinal movements of the cephalic fetus during labour and birth
  • Perform a vaginal examination during labour
  • Practice normal birth -2nd stage
  • Practice normal birth -3rd stage
  • Practice active management of third stage labour
  • Manage nuchal cord at birth
  • Perform catheterization on a woman in labour
  • Manage twin delivery
  • Examination of the placenta and membranes
  • Measure blood loss immediately after birth
  • Practice breech birth

EXAMPLES OF COMPETENCIES COVERED

  • Promote physiologic labor and birth
  • Manage a safe spontaneous vaginal birth; prevent, detect, and stabilize complications
  • Educate women to make individual choices about care
  • Detect, treat, and stabilize postnatal complications in women and refer as necessary

Postpartum Care

Postpartum Care includes 4 practice sessions where each session includes:

  • Scenario
  • Pre-reflection
  • Practice section
  • Post reflection

SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES COVERED

  • Examine, assess, and counsel on perineal tears
  • Provide postpartum assessment of the new monther
  • Repair of second-degree perineal tear

EXAMPLES OF COMPETENCIES COVERED

  • Manage a safe spontaneous vaginal birth; prevent, detect, and stabilize complications
  • Provide postnatal care to ensure the health of the woman

Complicated Birth

Complicated Birth includes 9 practice sessions where each session includes:

  • Scenario

SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES COVERED

  • Administer local anesthesia before performing an episiotomy
  • Perform an episiotomy on a woman during second stage of labor
  • Manage shoulder dystocia
  • Advise on the warning signs of hypertensive disorders
  • Prepare loading dose of Magnesium Sulphate for severe pre-eclampsia in pregnancy
  • Management of eclampsia in pregnancy
  • Manage postpartum hemorrhage in third stage of labour (AMTSL)
  • Perform manual removal for a retained placenta
  • Perform abdominal aortic compression
  • Management of PPH using Uterine Balloon tamponade
  • Perform bimanual compression
  • Perform shock management
  • Practice instrumental birth - vacuum extraction

EXAMPLES OF COMPETENCIES COVERED

  • Recognize conditions outside midwifery scope of practice and refer appropriately
  • Detect, stabilize, manage, and refer women with complicated pregnancies
  • Manage a safe spontaneous vaginal birth; prevent, detect, and stabilize complications
  • Detect, treat, and stabilize postnatal complications in woman and refer as necessary

Family Planning

Family Planning includes 7 practice sessions where each session includes:

  • Scenario
  • Pre-reflection
  • Practice section
  • Post reflection

SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES COVERED

  • Provide counseling on Family Planning and contraceptive methods
  • Counsel and advise on emergency contraceptive pill (ECP)
  • Demonstrate condom application
  • Insertion of Intra Uterine Device (IUCD) in the postpartum period
  • Practice removal of Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD)
  • Perform insertion of implant
  • Supervising a midwiferty student in the removal of an implant

Abortion Care

Abortion Care includes 1 practice session with:

  • Scenario
  • Pre-reflection
  • Practice section
  • Post reflection

SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES COVERED

  • Provide counseling to a woman for medical abortion for an unplanned pregnancy

EXAMPLES OF COMPETENCIES COVERED

  • Provide care to women with unintended or mistimed pregnancy

General Midwifery Care

General Midwifery Care includes 4 practice sessions where each session includes:

  • Scenario
  • Pre-reflection
  • Practice section
  • Post reflection

SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES COVERED

  • Practice respectful midwifery language
  • Practice cervical screening
  • Take urine analysis pregnancy test
  • Identifying signs of possible sexual trauma in women

EXAMPLES OF COMPETENCIES COVERED

  • Facilitate women to make individual choices about care
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication with women and families, health care teams, and community groups
  • Manage a safe spontaneous vaginal birth; prevent, detect, and stabilize complications

Newborn Care

Newborn Care includes 5 practice sessions where each session includes:

  • Scenario
  • Pre-reflection
  • Practice section
  • Post reflection

SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES COVERED

  • Conduct initial assessment of the newborn
  • Perform newborn resuscitation
  • Administer BCG injection to newborn infant
  • Provide kangaroo mother care for the premature infant
  • Support initiation of breastfeeding

EXAMPLES OF COMPETENCIES COVERED

  • Provide care of the newborn immediately after birth
  • Provide care to healthy newborn infant
